A tube man is an inflatable stick figure made of lengths of fabric tubing attached to a fan. Other names for tube men include skydancers, air dancers, inflatable men, and the Tall Boy. The tubing moves in a dynamic dancing or flailing action when the fan blasts air through it. This used-vehicle lot icon, often referred to as a Tall Boy, Fly Man, AirDancer, or, more commonly, "that ridiculous thing," may be the height of obnoxious advertising, right up there with the "buy a car, get a gun" slogan. But the tube man's seemingly endless pop-and-flop technique is actually supported by a ton of straightforward science. The thing's simplicity also contains some genius. Air is forced up through the thin nylon sleeve by a standard fan that rotates continuously. This causes pressure changes inside the tube that are strong enough to cause an AirDancer's distinctive samba.
